Travelling By Air

Ryanair operate regular budget flights to La Rochelle, the nearest airport and about 60 minutes from the house and reached via good roads. There are also budget and scheduled airline services into Poitiers, Nantes and Bordeaux; the latter is also about an hour away because of the fast motorway connection. Ryanair have also offered service Rochefort, which is even closer, but these do not always appear in the schedules…

Car hire is available at all the above airports. We will provide directions from the airport to the house.

Travelling By Ferry

The ferry options are multiple. Probably the most relaxing approach is to use the Brittany Ferries services, which include traditional day and overnight sailings plus a high-speed ferry link. These depart from Portsmouth, Poole and Plymouth.

By choice, we use the overnight service into St Malo, the nearest of the Brittany ports: an evening departure gives you supper on the boat, a breakfast in St Malo and lunch in the Charente. The route from all of the Brittany ports takes you to a truly memorable crossing of the Loire! By this stage its all dual carriageway and motorway and again we’ll supply full directions.

If you wish to make the journey more interesting still, we’d recommend coming off the motorway at Fontenay Le Comte and taking in the wet and dry Poitou marshes, known as Green Venice. It won’t add more than an hour to the journey.
