If arriving by air, the closest major airport is Rome, Italy Fiumicino. There is a train station right in terminal 3 of the airport just after you clear customs, where you can purchase train tickets through to Orvieto. The train from the airport takes you to Termini, the main train station in Rome, where you transfer to a Regional Express train to Orvieto, which is about a 1 hour train ride North of Rome.If renting a car at the airport, the drive to Orvieto takes about 1-1/2 hours, following initially the signs to Rome until you see signs leading to the A1 Autostrada and Florence (Firenze). Orvieto is only 2 miles long and a mile wide. So it's hard to get lost. If you have a car and want to explore the countryside there are many beautiful villages and towns to discover from Pienza, Siena, Cortona, Spello, Assisi, San Gemengion or leave the car and in an hour by train you can be in Rome.
