I would say a car is essential and the best way to explore all that the area has to offer.

DIRECTIONS TO STABLE COTTAGE FROM THE MOTORWAY:

Leave the M6 motorway at J36 and take the A590 west towards Barrow and Newby Bridge. Continue on the A590 past Newby Bridge and after 5 miles take the second exit on the roundabout onto the A5092 (which becomes the A595) to Broughton-in-Furness. After around 12 miles, you will drive past the first sign for Broughton (a white “Local Traffic” one), going through Foxfield (railway line on left) and also a second sign (some miles on from the first one) on the right (this sign is brown and says “Broughton-in-Furness Historic Market Town”). Following the road for another mile or so, you will come to a set of traffic lights at Duddon Bridge. Go through the traffic lights, and continue along the A595 road for a further 7 miles or so miles, passing through the Whicham Valley, until you get to the road end. From the road end, take a left turning and shortly thereafter a right turn which is signposted “Silecroft”. This right turn will put you on Main Street, Silecroft. Drive along this road which will take you over the railway lines. Look out for a left turning which will have a small signpost saying “Southfield”. Go down this rural mainly single track road for about a mile and you will come to a house straight in front of you - that is Southfield, and Stable Cottage is located just behind Southfield (the farmhouse). Incidentally, if you go too far, Main Road leads down to Silecroft beach – a lovely sandy beach which is little used and stretches for miles!
